Can the Heart Aerospace X1, the World’s Largest Electric Plane, Make Flying Cheaper?
Heart Aerospace's X1 just completed a historic all-electric flight using about $5 worth of electricity. But can the technology behind this electric aircraft actually make future airline tickets cheaper?

Heart Aerospace’s X1 is a full-scale battery-electric aircraft demonstrator designed to test technology for the company’s future ES-30 regional airliner. It completed its first flight on August 12, 2026, at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York.
The X1 flew for 27 minutes and reached an altitude of 1,100 feet. Its all-electric propulsion system delivered more than 1 megawatt of power during the flight. The aircraft has a 106-foot wingspan and weighs more than 25,000 pounds at takeoff.
Heart Aerospace says the X1 used approximately $5 worth of electricity during its first flight. This figure represents the electricity cost only and does not include expenses such as maintenance, crew, airport fees or battery degradation.
The X1 is a technology demonstrator for the planned 30-seat ES-30 hybrid-electric regional aircraft. The ES-30 is designed for up to 200 km of all-electric range and up to 800 km in hybrid operation under certain configurations. Heart Aerospace is targeting commercial service around 2031.
Could It Make Flying Cheaper?
Heart Aerospace expects the ES-30 to reduce aircraft operating costs by more than 40% compared with existing regional aircraft. The potential savings are expected to come from lower energy costs, electric propulsion and reduced maintenance requirements.
However, a 40% reduction in aircraft operating costs does not mean airline tickets will be 40% cheaper. Fares also include labor, airport fees, financing, taxes and other expenses.
